Chicagoland Photographer | Mega Fun with Callan's Epic Around Town Session

I have photographed Callan and her family a couple of times and also did her sister Cassidy's senior portraits a couple years back. Remember the girl with the piano and flying hair? Still favorites to this day! I was so thrilled to be asked to do Callan's senior portraits because I love her attitude and spontaneity.

We did the Around Town Session and lucky for us the car show was going on and we were able to get a few shots there that were unexpected. Of course everybody was thrilled to see a gorgeous blonde next to their car...

The little star of the show was her new 3 pound puppy Mabel though. Oh, my gosh! Couldn't believe she's real but yes she is, barks and walks and even poses for!

I was very curious about Callan's tattoo. It's a Dodecahedron which I had never heard of before. It has very special meaning to Callan after overcoming a year of struggling with her health!

"It symbolizes to me that the universe is so large and constantly moving that any problem you may encounter is so small in the grand scheme of things and that you are able to overcome it. It reminds me of my ability and strength." - Callan W.

18 Questions with Callan

1. What's your favorite song right now? What do you play on repeat?

Usually I would say something by Biggie Smalls, but right now I can’t stop listening to Love is Alive by Louis the Child. It’s such a beautiful sound.

2. What are 3 things on your bucket list?

I would love to go on a mission trip; I think it’s really important to experience something like that. I would also like to skydive at some point, and visit Bora Bora.

3. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

This really depends, it ranges from 10 minutes to an hour.

4. If you could teleport where would you go?

Kirkjufell Mountain in Iceland. It would be nice to escape reality for even a few minutes there and reconnect with myself.

5. If you were a super hero, what's your power?

Wouldn’t it be great to make money appear out of thin air? That would be my choice as a super power.

6. What animal would you want to be?

A leopard. People tend to think lions are the kings of the jungle, but really it’s the leopard.

7. If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

I would really like to invent something that can help people. It would be amazing to be known for something like that.

8. Favorite cosmetic product you can't live without?

I have this mint flavored chapstick that tastes amazing and cures chapped lips within minutes. All it says on it is the name of an insurance agency though, so I’m not sure what kind it is.

9. What fashion trend do you think is ridiculous?

I think any way that people can express themselves is wonderful, but the recent trend of intense face fillers and other face altering surgeries is ridiculous.

Huge t-shirt, shorts, and my white vans. It’s so comfortable.

French fries dipped in ice cream is like eating happiness.

15. What can you not live without?

Music. It is a key agent in artful expression.

16. Best book you've ever read?

A few years ago I picked up Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. It gives a beautiful insight on religion and how it affects people.

17. If you could travel or move anywhere, where would that be?

Anywhere with warm weather and a beautiful beach.

18. Why do you think it's important to do senior portraits? What was the best part?

Senior portraits are a celebration of surviving four rough years and still looking great by the end of it. The best part is being able to appreciate yourself and accomplishments and have it be documented via beautiful photos.

As many of you have noticed Crown Point has Angel Wings! I personally love seeing them on IG and I think it brings instant happiness to everyone who takes a picture there! They are located by Antiques on Main.

Callan was part of making this happen and hats off to everybody involved. Crown Point needed something like this. It enriches the community and is fun for all the photographers around.

NAHS (National Art Honors Society) is an organization found in many schools across America that gets academic honors students that have an interest in art involved in their community. Carol Drasga came to us with the idea of the angel wings. She emailed Mrs. Harris (our art teacher and NAHS coordinator, Lyndsey Harris) about the project. She had gotten Cyndi Walsh to be in on the project as well, so that we could use her building for the installation. We did some research on it, and here is the project’s meaning. Artist Collette Miller started the project in L.A. to show that “humans are the angels of the earth”. It is a world wide beautifying project that serves doubly as art and a photo opp, creating an interactive display. It was really a year long project, as we needed to speak with the historic board about it, and convince them to let us do it. And after a few times meeting with them, the plan was a go. Reagan Beckham designed the wings, and we all pitched in with ideas for it. We had to cut an eight foot stencil out, which took a couple of tries, then spent all Memorial Day weekend painting the wings. We are so happy with them and we know the city of Crown Point will be too!

Because we had so much and the fact that I loved Callan's red dress I asked her if she wants to do another shoot with my blue parachute I had just gotten from Great Britain. However after unpacking it, I realized it didn't have the strings. Then I remembered that the parachute that I hadn't used yet but was actually the first one I ever bought four years ago, might also be perfect for our shoot. So I was digging in my basement and found it. Malina and I had fun playing with the parachutes in our driveway. Parachutes just bring out the inner child. The reason I hadn't used that orange and white striped one was the fact that is was the biggest one and it requires man power. It was actually my 16 year wedding anniversary yesterday and all I wanted as a gift was my husband coming out to play with us. And he did and so did my daughter.

Callan brought her sweet friend Skylar and the 3 of them worked their muscles to make anything happen with the gigantic parachutes on this none windy day! Thank you so much Skylar. I have to say it was all worth it - I got some amazing images out of this and I hope, Callan, you love them as well!

Callan, I could watch you twirl in that gorgeous floral dress all day! It's the meaning of life for me - to be in the moment and enjoy it! Thank you for being game for the parachute pix as well! I am in love with them!!!

Best of luck for the future and keep that great attitude!
